# Slack app

> Ask the Failproof Assistant from Slack, get charts in the thread, and approve changes with a button.

Ask the [Failproof Assistant](https://docs.befailproof.ai/sessions/assistant.md) from Slack. Mention the app in a channel, send it a direct message, or use `/failproof <question>`. Answers use **your own** Failproof AI permissions, charts arrive in the thread, and anything that would change something asks you to approve it first.

There is one official app. It works the same whether your Failproof AI Cloud is hosted or self-hosted.

## Connect a workspace

You need the `settings:write` permission in Failproof AI and, in Slack, to be a workspace admin or owner, or the person adding the app.

> [tab] From Failproof AI
>
> 1. Go to **Settings → Integrations** and select **Add to Slack**.
> 2. Approve the app in Slack.
> 3. Back in Failproof AI, confirm connecting the workspace to your organization.

> [tab] From Slack
>
> 1. Add the app, then open its **Home** tab.
> 2. Choose **Continue with FailproofAI Cloud**, or **Use my own URL** and enter the address you sign in at.
> 3. Select the continue button, sign in, pick the organization, and confirm. The link works once and expires after 10 minutes.

One workspace connects to one organization, and one organization to one workspace.

Don't have an account? [Create one](https://app.befailproof.ai/login) first, then connect.

## Who you are in Slack

The first time you ask, the app works out which member you are:

* **Automatically, by email**, when you are a full member of the connected workspace, your Slack email is confirmed, and exactly one member of the organization uses that email.
* **Otherwise**, you get a private **Link your account** button that opens Failproof AI and links your Slack user to your account.

## Ask a question

| Where | How |
| - | - |
| A channel | Mention the app. Reply in its thread to continue, with no mention needed |
| A direct message | Message the app |
| A group direct message the app is in | Mention it, then reply in its thread to continue |
| A Slack Connect channel | Mention the app |
| Any conversation the app is in | `/failproof <question>` starts a thread with the answer |
| `/failproof help` | See what the app can do |
| `/failproof status` | See which organization is connected and who you're linked as |
| `/failproof link` | See which Failproof AI account you're linked to |

One thread is one conversation. Colleagues can mention the app in the same thread, and it answers each of them with their own permissions. Only the person who started the thread continues it without a mention.

When the answer is data, the app posts a chart or a table with a link to open it in Failproof AI.

## Approve changes

Every change the assistant makes shows **Approve** and **Cancel** buttons first, and Slack asks once more before **Approve**. Only the person who asked can answer them, the buttons expire after 5 minutes, and the change is made with that person's permissions.

From Slack, the assistant can change saved queries and dashboards, evaluations, alerts, audits, issues, and policies, and suggest code fixes, each if you hold the permission. It can't change API keys, users, or settings.

## Link previews

Failproof AI issue, session, and evaluation links pasted in Slack unfurl into cards on hosted Failproof AI Cloud. A card shows only what the person who triggered it can see. Links to a self-hosted address don't unfurl, though cards in the assistant's own answers still appear.

## Slack Connect channels

People from another workspace can use the app if they are members of the organization, after linking their account. Answers are visible to everyone in the conversation, including people who aren't members of your organization, so ask where everyone may see the answer.

The app only answers once every other workspace in the channel has someone linked to the organization. Until then, it tells the person asking why.

## Permissions the app asks for

| Slack permission | Why |
| - | - |
| `app_mentions:read` | Know when someone mentions the app |
| `channels:history`, `groups:history`, `im:history`, `mpim:history` | Receive direct messages and replies in the app's threads. The app ignores other messages, and it never reads a conversation's past messages |
| `channels:read`, `groups:read`, `im:read`, `mpim:read` | Check what kind of conversation it's in, so it knows who can see an answer |
| `chat:write` | Post answers and approval buttons |
| `commands` | Provide `/failproof` |
| `files:write` | Post charts |
| `links:read`, `links:write` | Show previews of pasted Failproof AI links |
| `users:read`, `users:read.email` | Match you to your Failproof AI account, and show names |

## Disconnect

Go to **Settings → Integrations** and select **Disconnect**, use **Disconnect** on the app's **Home** tab, or remove the app from Slack.

Any of these deletes the workspace's connection, bot token, linked accounts, and thread records. Past Slack conversations stay readable in the dashboard. The organization can then connect any workspace straight away.

## Data and privacy

Questions and answers are saved as conversations in your organization's dashboard, under the person who started the thread. Slack data is never used to train AI models. See the [privacy policy](https://befailproof.ai/privacy/) for what the app receives and how long it's kept.

## Troubleshooting

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| "This workspace isn't connected to a FailproofAI Cloud yet." | A workspace admin opens the app's **Home** tab and chooses one |
| "This link expired or was already used." | Choose your Cloud again on the **Home** tab for a new link |
| "This org is already connected to a Slack workspace." | Disconnect it in settings first |
| "That Slack workspace is connected to another org." | Disconnect it from that organization first |
| "Link your account to use the assistant." | Select the button and confirm in Failproof AI |
| The app doesn't answer in a group direct message | Add the app to Slack again to grant its group permissions. Your connection is kept |
| "I won't post answers from your organization here" | Someone in that workspace who is a member of the organization mentions the app and links their account |
